Pack your punches with the power of doing good!
If you are looking for a practice to cultivate your speed, endurance, strength, and over all athleticism, we invite you to be our guest for our next open gym event on
Friday December 11, 2015, from 6 to 7pm!
Coach Caleb Terray is the ONLY Chinatown Jeet Kune Do ranked trainer in the San Fernando Valley, and he will be teaching a
FREE Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing class that is open to beginners and experienced martial artists alike. And as with all our open events, both members and non-members of Breakthrough are welcome, so bring a friend!
This event will once again support the West Valley Food Pantry with a holiday toy drive to support needy families in our local community. As a service to the families receiving support from the Pantry, they host an annual event where parents can come pick out a toy to wrap up and give for the holidays. All funds donated to the Food Pantry must be used for food only, so they rely entirely on toy donations for this event. They have over 600 kids on their list, ranging from babies to teens, so toys for all ages and gift cards to places like Target for the teenagers are desperately needed.
So, bring a toy and a friend, and join us Friday December 11 to pack your punches with the power of doing good!
Curious about what Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing is all about? JKD was the creation of legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee. Bruce’s kickboxing era flourished in the late 1960s in Los Angeles Chinatown, and the training was devoted to tough physical conditioning and tool development. The term “kickboxing” did not really exist, at the time, and the closed-door training sessions included lots of sparring to field test the new blend of skills developed. These included hand techniques from western boxing, kicking from Wing Chun and Savate, footwork and tactics from fencing, even grappling elements from Judo. Our JKD kickboxing class will focus on the basic striking tools and training methods used in this unique style, which remain highly effective to this day!
From the book Jeet Kune Do Kickboxing by Chris Kent and Tim Tackett: “Combative situations combine different elements, and change from moment to moment. It may stress speed one moment, strength the next, then resilience, then endurance. Every one of the combative skills has its own technique, its own motion that must be developed and perfected, the right move at the right time. In any physical movement there is always a most efficient and lively manner to carry it out, that is regarding leverage, balance, economical use of motion.”
